Biddestone have been on the decline for some years now and a win for Winsley was probably expected. However, the nature of the win was spectacular. Freddie Richards 151* (256 fps) and Chairman Charlie Holton 100 (160 fps) put on well over 200 for the first wicket before Charlie retired out (another league first for Winsley?) as he was impaired by hayfever! Nick Swinburne tells me that he cannot remember 2 Winsley openers both getting tons before. A final score of 296-3 was reached with some extravagant hitting and impressive running, Hugo Bradbury scoring a quick 22.
Freddie’s knock then inspired Jasper who finished with 5-34 off his 9 overs (115 fps) as Biddestone were bowled out for 186; there were three catches for Hugo Bradbury (67 fps). With Biddestone at 74-5 all was well but Webster and Mohapatra then put on 97 in just 12 overs before Jasper returned to the attack and quickly finished the game.
I was thinking of writing about Biddestone dating back to Saxon times and was recorded as Bedestone in the 1086 Domesday Book or about the iconic duck pond. Instead a Biddestone quiz with a bottle of wine for the first person to send me the right answer (Spencers barred from entering). (Martyn.garrod@yahoo.com)
a) This building is one mile from Biddestone, what goes on in here?
b) Name two other locations with similar buildings.

The 2nds batted first against Christian Malford and finished on 191-9. Par scores at Winsley are usually around 240 these days so this was a little disappointing especially as 6 batsmen had reached double figures with only Ben Strange 43 (53 fps) and Simon Richards 37 making significant contributions. Christian Malford reached their target for the loss of 5 wickets and with 13 overs to spare. Erica Baxter led the bowling 2-25 (74fps) and it is good to see Pete Orchard again (12 fps).
The 3rds travelled to Urchfont for their bottom of the table clash against Potterne 4s. Unfortunately, the scores seem somewhat similar to the 2nds. Winsley 186 ao Potterne 187-3 in 34 overs. Four batsmen reached double figures for Winsley with Oli Howe continuing his fine season with 59 (94fps) and Rob Jones unbeaten on 38 when the innings closed after 44 overs. Potterne were always ahead of the game with their opener scoring a fine 93*.
Southwick Oval for the 4ths against Chippenham and return of some Winsley legends..Jeffrey, Cross, Wickens x2 and Simpson! Batting first a score of 169-9 in 40 overs was respectable with Andrew Cross leading the way with 68 (103fps). Chippenham are top of the league and reached their target with ease after 27 overs for the loss of just 3 wickets. Maybe they won a little sooner as the WCCL website shows they reached 180-3; such are the vagaries of village cricket and scoring.
