week 16 - 2nds win, disappointment elsewhere

The first XI travelled to Marlborough for a critical game at the top of the league. It was disappointing to have such a crucial game played on a pitch that deteriorated throughout the day and, consequently, Marlborough winning the toss was probably crucial. Marlborough were bowled out for 164. Two early wickets for Jasper Richards were followed by 30 overs of spin with combined figures of 6-116; Andy Owen was the most successful with 4-23 (116fps). There were also two run outs attributed to James Cousens with the first a magnificent direct hit from boundary.

In reply Winsley were bowled out for 137. A confident start from Charlie Holton and Andy Owen (36 runs) was interrupted with Charlie caught off a ball that had taken a vicious bounce. Thereafter wickets fell regularly although Matty Garrod 25 and Oli Hendy 23 looked as though they could take Winsley to victory before both were caught at deep long on.

The Ist XI are now not at the top but two more wins against Biddestone and Chippenham 2s will secure promotion if not the title. Biddestone have hit some form of late and are fighting to avoid relegation so Saturday's game at home will again be crucial.

The 2nds also played Marlborough and had a comfortable victory with Gareth Pugh starring! Marlborough batted first and in 45 overs rather crawled to 132-9. Gareth Pugh 3-23, Josh Lewis 2-28 and Peter Orchard 2-21 (60fps) were the main wicket takers. It took Winsley just 20 overs to reach their target for the loss of one wicket. Gareth scoring 76* (181fps) and Jon Keepen 46* (66fps) doing the damage.

It is getting tight at the bottom of division 8 and the 3rds needed a win against Marshfield; sadly it was not to be. Marshfield batted first and were bowled out for 197 in 44 overs. Jordan Wickens 2-32 (56fps) had another good day but George Timbrell- White, on debut, stole the show with 5-33. George also took 3 catches! (171fps). Matt Cousins opened and scored 51 (76fps) but the next highest score was just 24 and this was not enough to secure a win.

There were just 3 players in the 4ths that have already registered fantasy points this season with 4 of the 11  coming from our. Women's WEPL XI.   Beckington are 3rd in the table and pushing for promotion. Batting first Winsley scored 161 ao in 39 overs. Ben Howe (58fps) top scored with 48 and Charlie Bostock on debut reached 25. It took Beckington 30 overs to reach their target for the loss of 3 wickets. Charlie Bostock again with 2-20. Jemimah Barker was our most economical bowler with 0-16 off 4 overs. This leaves the 4ths in 7th/8 in the league.
