Week 13 - Cup semi-finalists decided.

This was not a good day at the office for the Ist XI who were completely outplayed by Bishops Cannings. Another good opening stand ended on 37 and this became 90-3 at the first ‘refreshment break’ after 15 overs. Wickets then began to fall and the innings rather dribbled along. Both the BC change bowlers had excellent spells 2-26 and 1-29 respectively and this completely changed the complexion of the Winsley innings. All out 166 in 42 overs was never going to be enough with BC winning in the 33rd over 167-2. JNG took both wickets 2-24 (58fps) and a promising debut for James Cousens 0-34. It all looks quite tight at the top of the league now!

The 2nds headed off to Chippenham rugby club to play Allington. The home team batted first and steadily accumulated runs. Their final total of 223-8 largely depended on 85 from their captain. Gareth Pugh 3-47  and Peter Orchard 2-30 (55fps) led the bowling. The Winsley innings ended on 186-9 after their 45 overs. Four batsmen reached the 30s and it probably needed one or two to ‘go on’ and achieve the win. Toby Nightingale with 30, 1-35 and a catch was man of the match for Winsley (75fps).

The thirds have climbed four places off the bottom of division 8 with this win against Swindon Royal Challengers. Swindon batted first and were bowled out for just 112. Nelson Owen had superb figures of 4-22 (65 fps) and he was ably supported by Bella Tweddle who finished the innings with 3-13 off just 3 overs. (45fps). The runs were reached for the loss of 2 wickets in just 18 overs. The batting line up of Andy Owen 74* (119fps), Matt Cousins 22 and Kevin Hendy 22* proving to be far too strong. Next week there will be another key battle at the base of the division against Bradford-on-Avon 2s.

This was an important game against Swindon 5ths at Ramsbury. Batting first, Winsley were dismissed for 159 in the 37th over. Disappointingly, Swindon needed just 26 overs to reach their target for the loss of 5 wickets. Iwan Legg captained the team and had a good all round day winning the toss, top scoring with 36 and taking 2-25 (71fps). It was also good to see club stalwarts Niall 20 runs and Nigel Simpson 1-23 having good performances.

Ben has finalised this report during his rest breaks at the World Masters Hockey tournament in Rotterdam where he is officiating. Altogether, there will be 310 outdoor matches played over 10 days with the finals next Saturday.

As Josh and Matty can testify, a cricket tour of The Netherlands is great fun. How about Winsley men and women for preseason 2027?!
