Week 10 sees the return fixtures from the opening day of the season where games were mostly abandoned at tea time due to persistent rain. With no sign of rain the Ist XI won the toss and batted on an excellent Winsley wicket. Once again, Charlie Holton 67 (102 fps) and Freddie Richards 50 (105 fps) provided an excellent foundation for the innings with an opening stand of 116. Run rate was around 4.5 an over at the time. JNG came in with the score at 144-2. Josh then batted with great ferocity scoring a 49 ball century with 14 fours and 6 sixes in his 115*. With Stuart McCollam 30*- Josh put an undefeated 120 for the 4th wicket, Winsley finishing on 304-3. I looked back this season at Wootton Bassett’s recent scorecards and noticed that it is normal for their ‘fifth bowler’ to bowl 9 of the final 18 overs. This certainly backfired on Saturday as these 9 overs went for 90 runs. However I should report that opening bowler H Griffin had figures of 7 overs for 31 but finished with 9 overs for 71; Josh was in phenomenal form.
Wootton Bassett were in a good position to chase down the score but rather settled for an excellent 262-7 with their captain E.Burke scoring 102* in 90 balls. Josh with 2-43 and Matty Garrod 2-47 were the main wicket takers. This gave Josh 245 fantasy points just 11 short of Freddie’s total against Biddestone a couple of weeks ago.
The 2nd XI travelled to Beckington. Winsley scored 176 in 41 overs and Beckington reached their target with the loss of 6 wickets and 3 overs remaining. Wickets fell regularly in the Winsley innings with only Modester 37 making a significant score and, of course, it was disappointing to not use all the overs. Ben Strange led the wicket takers with 3-32 and Peter Orchard took 2-13 (74 fps). Both Peter’s wickets were attributed to Modester at wicket-keeper (57 fps).
Swindon Super Strikers were the opposition for the 3rds at Southwick. A very tense finish saw SSS win by just one wicket with 5 overs to spare. Winsley scored 182-9 and SSS 183-9. Kevin Hendy 34 and Ethan Pugh 32 (52 fps) led the batting with John Iles again man of the match with 4-36 (99fps). Bella Tweddle also had a good all round day with a catch, run out and 2-21 (61fps).
The 4ths travelled to Erlestoke and had a difficult afternoon in the field. Batting first, Winsley reached 186ao in 35 overs. Top scorers were Henry Sparrowhawk and Sonny Mears who both scored 37. In reply Erlestoke took just 23 overs for the loss of no wickets with Graeme Morrison 109*. Henry Sparrowhawk’s figures of 5-0-23-0 earned him man of the match (47 fps).
Winsley ladies made the long trip to Bridgwater for their WEPL match on Sunday. Bridgwater reached 323-5 in their 40 overs with Emma Mason scoring a magnificent 166. For Winsley, Lauren Adams took 3-57. In reply, Winsley lost early wickets and were bowled out for 79 after 17 overs. Modester 17 and Charlotte Morrison 12 were the top scorers.
