Despite the rain there was cricket played at Winsley on Sunday afternoon. The women’s XI welcomed Devizes in the WEPL premier division. Devizes batted first and reached the formidable total of 256-5 in their 40 overs. Jen Heppell 41 and opener Roman Sabin put on 118 for the third wicket with Rowan finishing on 99*. Jemimah Barker took 3-34 in her 8 overs for Winsley. After a bright start, wickets fell regularly in the Winsley innings. Modester top scored with 30. Winsley were eventually bowled out for 68 in 18 overs. Fantasy points were not officially awarded for performances in the Women’s games but if they were, the top three for Winsley would be Modester 581 fps, Lauren Adams 429 fps and Holly Presswell 128 fps. The women still have one more match away at Bath on Sunday September 6th. Thanks must be shown to Erica Baxter for leading the team in their debut WEPL season and to Modester for her excellent wicket keeper-batting. I’m sure you will join us in wishing Modester our best as she jets off to join the Zimbabwe squad for their 5 match T20 series which starts in Bulawayo on the 11th September.
What a summer this has been! Just weeks 1, 6 and 18 had cancelled or abandoned matches and there has mostly been wall to wall sunshine. The temperatures have been particularly high and the Met Office are predicting that this pattern is likely to be repeated in 2027; the impact of global warming has arrived! Credit again must be given to the groundsmen all around the county who have had to work so very hard to produce playable wickets. Andrew Cross and his team at Winsley have produced some belters although I suspect again that the water bill for 2026 will be astronomical! If this was not enough, 2026 saw the first use of Southwick as our outground and pitch reports here have been very favourable; pitch scores for division 8 and 10 have placed Southwick in mid-table in the first year.
With few cancellations, more games being played and more victories it is not too surprising that there has been quite a jump in the fantasy scores. Last year Neil Hussey won with 6748 points so John Spencer’s total of 9043 is just short of the record set of 9211 in 2022. I should also give an honourable mention to Pat Spencer who trailed him for much of the season and finished only 160 points behind.John’s winning team was:

As reported last week, the fantasy cup was won by Hugo Bradbury’s ‘Run Out of Ideas’ beating Laura Holton’s ‘Holtons Wicket Wonders’in the final. This is a good moment to wish both Hugo good luck as he travels to Traralgon to the south east of Melbourne to continue his cricket during the winter and also good luck to Laura as she recovers from the nasty cricketing injury to her foot.
The Ist XI ended their season away at Chippenham where heavy rain made the cancellation inevitable. With all matches in division 1 having a similar fate it means that Winsley finished 2nd behind Bishops Cannings and are promoted back to WEPL Wiltshire at their first attempt.

The Wiltshire League division one top statistics are full of Winsley performances. Scoring was diligently done by Julie Hendy so a special thank you to her for her dedication over the season.
Top performers for the 1st in the Wiltshire League were:

The seconds were due to be home to relegated Biddestone. The considered opinion at Christian Malford last week was that promotion was still possible but, in truth, results elsewhere had not gone well and 4th place looked to be the highest that could be reached. Winsley have actually finished 5th in Division 4 after the game was abandoned.
Top performers for the 2nds in the Wiltshire League were

The 3rds finished 8th in league 8 after their game against Swindon Hunters was cancelled.

The 4th XI game at home to Spye was also abandoned leaving Winsley 7th out of 8. Calne won the league with a tad of controversy if you wish to analyse this week's results with a suspicious forfeit. . The only player on the WCCL honours board was Michael Sherring who scored 127 the 5th highest innings. He was also the top scorer with 192 runs in just two innings. Henry Sparrowhawk led the bowlers with 8 wickets.
The final honours boards for 2026 are as follows. There were 9 more centuries than last year and an increase of 1 for five wicket hauls.

Final Individual player fantasy scores for the year are at the bottom of this email.
Over the season the most valuable fantasy player based on the point to value average and FANTASY PLAYER OF THE YEAR with a point to average value of 185 is Charlie Holton & Freddie Richards. This result is based on the original points value given at the start of the season and finally rubber stamped by Huss. In general these values were a bit too generous this year (JNG only 8!) and will be significantly increased for 2027.
Charlie was given a value of 6 and scored 1110 fantasy points. Remarkably, Freddie Richards, his opening partner has identical figures.
The top 5 in the value to point average are
A | Charlie Holton | 6 | 1110 | 185.00 |
A | Freddie Richards | 6 | 1110 | 185.00 |

JNG tops the fantasy point scoreboard with 1286 points. The record here was Campbell McKegg with 1618 points in 2022. The top 11 fantasy players are
1 | Josh Norgrove-Gray | 8 | 1286 |
2 | Charlie Holton | 6 | 1110 |
3 | Freddie Richards | 6 | 1110 |

9 | Peter Merrell | 4 | 631 |
10 | Ben Strange | 7 | 629 |
11 | Toby Nightingale | 6 | 621 |
This team would have cost 67 units (only 62 allowed) and, with JNG as captain, scored a total of 10,645 points.
Using the correct selection criteria ( 3 in group A, 4 in group B etc..) the team of the season would be similar except Modester loses out to Josh Lewis and Hugo Bradbury to John Iles.
List A | Charlie Holton | 6 | 1110 |
List A | Freddie Richards | 6 | 1110 |

List D | Jon Keepen | 7 | 962 |
This team would have cost 66 units and, with JNG as captain, scored a total of 10076 points.
After a good deal of playing around (and assistance from AI) we think the
AFFORDABLE fantasy team of the season costing 62 units or less and following the selection criteria is (unless you can do better) sees Josh Lewis miss out from the team above and he is replaced by Jordan Wickens. This team would cost 62 units and with Josh as captain scored 9808 points Just remember John Spencer’s winning total of 9043 included transfers!
As ever my thanks to everyone for joining in during the centenary year. The captains, umpires and the scorers for being prompt with the results and Ben Garrod for helping with all the data, spreadsheets and AI (will I be needed next year?!) Also thanks to those that contributed £5 or so and this has been used to support Dorothy House.
