Director of Cricket Phil Smith said: "All Stars is a starter programme run by English cricket’s governing body, the ECB, for 5-8 years old providing a fun and energetic intro to cricket. The idea is to make cricket as accessible as possible and appeal to a wider range of children. That’s certainly what we’ve seen — we get participants from a wide range of backgrounds.

"The idea is to boost their self-esteem and try new things. We’ve run it every year since its inception eight years ago.

"It does boost membership, as we’ve managed to transition some All Stars members into Juniors and several of those who joined us in the early years have gone on to represent the club with distinction.  It benefits the community as well, helping children to make new friends, encouraging them to stay physically fit

"So All Stars provides benefits all round — for participants themselves, for the community and for the club."

The ECB says each session has been developed with input from Director of England Cricket Andrew Strauss and the England performance team so children can be equipped with the basic skills they need to develop a lifelong love of cricket.

ECB Director of Participation and Growth Matt Dwyer said: “We have strong ambitions to significantly grow the game and this programme is all about putting a bat and ball in the hands of more children at an earlier age. First and foremost, we want to make playing cricket a fun and enjoyable experience for children and give them a passion for the game to last a lifetime.

“We also want to make sure that parents have a great first experience at the club and give them the chance to have an hour back with their kids every week. We will be encouraging parents to get involved with sessions, whatever their prior knowledge of the game."
