YOLO Cricket and Posh Tea: Leatherhead U11 Girls Push Reigate to the Brink

A glorious, sun‑drenched afternoon set the stage for a cracking game of cricket, complete with drama before a ball was bowled. Reigate won the toss, though their plans wobbled when a last‑minute injury forced them into a frantic speed‑dial for reinforcements. They chose to bat first.

From the outset, it was clear that boundaries would be rare treasures. The outfield grass — left defiantly un‑scythed — slowed everything to a crawl. But our bowlers rose to the challenge superbly. Charlotte and Lily led the charge, bowling beautifully to claim key wickets and plenty of smiles. Week by week, the whole attack is sharpening up, and the hard graft at training is shining through.

Just as we looked set to keep Reigate to a modest total, their final pair found their timing and cleared the infield with a few clean strikes, nudging their score up to a competitive 289.

After a very posh tea of cheese, crackers and grapes — truly elite‑level scran from Reigate — the girls strode out for the chase in buoyant spirits.

Skipper Mia set the tone immediately, striking the ball sweetly and confidently on her way to a well‑deserved Batter of the Match award. Her partner Elsie backed her up brilliantly, showing off some classy shots to go with her earlier display of impeccable Dire Straits knowledge.

Next came ‘Boom Boom’ Emilia and Harriet, who kept the scoreboard ticking with positive intent and sharp running that had the fielders scrambling. Ellie and Charlotte then weathered a tough spell against Reigate’s star bowler, digging in with gritty defence before unleashing a late burst of runs to keep us firmly in the hunt.

With the pressure rising, our final pair — Zadie and Lily — went for it. Their aggressive running and boundary‑hunting had the travelling supporters on their feet, hearts thumping through a thrilling finale. A few risky singles were taken along the way, but with a target to chase, a touch of YOLO cricket was exactly what the moment demanded.

In the end, we fell just short — but the pride was immense. The girls showed superb game awareness, real determination, and a wonderfully channelled competitive spirit that was a joy for every parent to watch.

Onwards and upwards — this team is growing fast, and the signs are seriously exciting.
