Lucy's 67 wins it

Our final game of the season and the furthest away trip saw our Women’s 2nd XI take on Eynsham on Sunday. Falkland lost the toss and were asked to bat first.

Lucy Mugford and Isabel Gallimore opened confidently, finding early boundaries and putting pressure on the bowlers. Isabel was first to fall, lofting an easy catch for seven. Amelia Quinn followed but lasted only two balls before offering another straightforward chance.

Captain Nat Brown looked composed at the crease before a good delivery clipped her off stump. Grace Gibby joined Lucy and together they built a positive partnership, with Lucy playing assertively and keeping the scoreboard moving. The pair added 31 before Grace was bowled by a straight one, leaving Falkland 61 to 4. Two quick wickets followed, Alexa Brown and Jessica Squire, and suddenly Falkland were 67 to 6.

Flora Hay joined Lucy, who was closing in on a well deserved fifty. Flora and Poppy both fell to clean bowled dismissals, but Lucy remained resolute. To the delight of her teammates, she struck a crisp boundary to bring up her fifty. Ruthie then supported her well in a 30 run stand before also missing a straight ball. Caitlin joined Lucy at the end and batted nicely, but Lucy’s superb innings finally ended on an outstanding 67. No other batter reached double figures, underlining just how impressive her knock was.

Eynsham required 124 to win, and Falkland’s bowlers rose to the challenge immediately. Jess struck in the first over, clean bowling the opener. Eynsham’s batters struggled against Falkland’s accuracy and were content to defend rather than score. Grace then delivered a brilliant sixth over, taking two wickets in four balls.

Flora added another clean bowled dismissal, followed by wickets for Amelia and Ruthie as Eynsham faltered. A well directed delivery from Alexa struck the batter in front of middle stump, and wicketkeeper Isabel appealed confidently for the LBW. The fielding was sharp throughout, and Ruthie sealed the victory with another LBW. Eynsham finished on 88 for 8, well short of the target.

It was an excellent team fielding performance that supported a superb individual batting display. This group will be genuine contenders for the league title next season, and the experience gained this year will be invaluable for their development.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to our first season, especially the softball players who bravely stepped into hardball and enjoyed it, and Leanne and Jodi for scoring every week. Without you, the games simply could not happen.
