First league match and a narrow defeat
Sunday saw Falkland 2nd XI play their very first league game in Division 3 of the Home Counties League, with an away trip to West Illsley.
Falkland lost the toss and West Illsley decided to bat first. Lucy opened the bowling on the sloping pitch, with Grace taking the second over. Both girls bowled beautifully and picked up a wicket apiece inside the first four overs. Captain Daisy had quite a deep field set, and Illsley were starting to find gaps and run well between the wickets.
Georgia picked up the third wicket with another clean-bowled dismissal, and with a few more wickets Falkland would have been looking at the tailenders. Eleanor was next in the wicket column; a quick ball was too good for the batter and just clipped leg stump. Unfortunately, this brought both of Illsley's power hitters to the crease.
It took Captain Daisy to break the partnership, clean bowling the batter. Now Falkland had an end to attack. Daisy picked up three more wickets by bowling pitched-up, straight deliveries. Izzy came back on and bowled a maiden, which included a nice run-out, with Grace throwing the ball in and Isabel doing very well to gather it and remove the bails. Grace took the final wicket with a lovely away-swinger. A special mention goes to Lucy, who bowled four overs for just four runs, and Daisy for picking up four wickets.
West Illsley finished on 138 all out.
Falkland needed to bat sensibly and positively to chase the total down. Isabel carried on her good early-season form, opening the batting, and Zoe was looking comfortable before she was run out. Daisy joined Isabel, and both girls were looking good and running well between the wickets. Isabel was next to fall, lbw for 15.
Lucy joined Daisy and, again, a good partnership was taking shape before an unlucky deflection saw Daisy run out after scoring 20 runs. Izzy joined Lucy, and a solid partnership developed, taking the game away from West Illsley. They put on 32 runs before Lucy hit the ball hard but aerially and was caught for a quick 13 runs.
Drinks came, and the coaches were happy with the position we were in. The message was simple: keep the ball down and try not to offer any catching chances. Two balls after drinks, Grace found herself walking back after a good catch in the deep. Falkland were now 94–5.
Georgia came in but, two balls later, was walking back after being clean bowled. Falkland were 94–6. Eleanor came in and again fell to a positive but aerial shot, resulting in another very good catch. At 98–7, Tabatha joined Izzy and the pair looked good, putting together an excellent 24-run partnership, then Izzy was undone by a lovely away-swinger which beat her outside edge and just clipped the bail off off-stump. Izzy was out for a well-made 34. Falkland were 122–8.
Unfortunately, Falkland lost the final two wickets without troubling the scorers and finished 122 all out, losing by just 16 runs.
There was so much positive learning to take from today's match, and I'm looking forward to seeing our team develop over the course of the season. Thank you for all the support from the sidelines today; it means a lot to the team.
