The new Lionel Abel-Smith Ground was revealed to the public on 10th July, in an introductory Open Day. The club was delighted at the huge level of interest, with an estimated 300 visitors over the course of the afternoon and evening. There was a lot of excitement about the new facilities, the excellent views and the archeological finds, which were presented by the experts from Cotswold Archaeology.
Whilst play at Tring Road will not be possible until the spring of 2027, the club is opening the Seabrook Pavilion bar to members on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings and we plan to keep this running through the autumn and winter. Information on becoming a member of the club is available at: https://wendovercc.org/joining.
This will allow members to become familiar with the upper part of the ground prior to next spring, when the club takes full possession of the playing area and the ground comes into full use for the 2027 season. The bar will be staffed by volunteer club members for these three nights a week, so please be patient. Minor issues are being dealt with as we become familiar with the building and facilities. If you note anything that can be improved when visiting, please mention it to one of the volunteers.
The pavilion is looking every bit as great as we had hoped and the square looks beautifully green, as it is being watered daily to help it bed in. The new outfield, the grass banks and the upper practice area could do with some rain, much like the rest of us. It will be particularly pleasing to see the whole playing area greened up in the autumn.
Lastly, please make sure to mark Saturday 24th April 2027 in your diary. This will see the official opening of the ground and the first cricket match on the square. There will be a day of activities for all club members, from juniors to geriatrics, and from morning until night.
