If ever there was a day when the Leatherhead Girls U11 Hardball squad showed just how far they’ve come, this was it. Against the unbeaten league leaders, on their home turf, facing bowlers who looked like they’d been training at the Banstead Fast Bowling Academy for Gifted Rockets, our girls produced a performance that had every parent standing, cheering, and occasionally forgetting to breathe. It felt like watching a proper cricket match — tension, skill, grit, and heart in equal measure.
Captain Lily lost the toss and Leatherhead were sent in to bat, with the first two pairs having to face the downhill thunderbolts. Lesser mortals might have panicked. Not this lot.
Charlotte and Lottie opened with real authority — Lottie back in full textbook batting mode, Charlotte solid as ever.
Emilia and the Bookham Express (Abi) followed, striking three boundaries between them and running with their usual mischief‑making intent.
Elena and the Precision Panther (Issy) then took guard, with Issy’s boundary radar pinging nicely.
Mia and Lily closed the innings, navigating the quickest bowling we’ve seen all season — and there was more than one of them firing rockets.
By the end of the innings, the girls had stood up to pace, bounce, slope, and pressure with real maturity.
The interval was, frankly, elite.
Capri‑Sun. Homemade brownies. Watermelon. Grapes. Mini pizzas. Enough food to feed the squad, the spectators, and possibly the entire Banstead outfield. The return fixture on 12 July now has a snack‑table bar set dangerously high.
Leatherhead began their defence bowling downhill, with Mia — “The Magician” — taking the gloves first. And she lived up to the nickname. Sharp footwork, soft hands, and that uncanny ability to make tricky takes look effortless.
For the second half of the innings, the gloves passed to Emilia — “The Cat” — who was simply outstanding. Agile, spring‑loaded, and reading the game beautifully, she reminded several parents of the great wicketkeepers of the past. Soft hands, quick feet, and total commitment. A proper keeping display.
Wickets were hard to come by against a strong Banstead batting unit, but:
Charlotte claimed the only bowling wicket of the day.
Two brilliant run outs came from Issy and Elena, both hitting the stumps with the batters short of their ground.
Fielding was outstanding throughout — the moment of the day being Lily’s full‑length diving stop, a highlight‑reel moment of sheer commitment.
Once again, it was a single opposition batter who made the decisive difference, but the Leatherhead effort was immense from first ball to last.
Best Bowler: Issy – The Precision Panther
Best Batter: Lottie – The Textbook Technician
Both fully deserved, though every player contributed to a performance that felt like a statement of how far this team has come in just 2.5 years — especially against opponents who play multiple times a week for school.
An 11‑run defeat on paper. A huge step forward on the pitch. A performance full of belief, bravery, and brilliant cricket.
Now the challenge is simple: Repeat it — or go one better — this Sunday at home to Reigate.
The girls are ready.
