Consett U14s delivered a strong home performance to record a 45–17 win over Gateshead at Belle Vue. Despite blustery conditions and a testing first half, the team showed resilience, control, and some excellent rugby to finish the game in style.
First Half
Playing into a stiff wind, Consett started with real intent. Just four minutes in, Jacob opened the scoring after a spell of sustained pressure close to the line. The conversion drifted wide, but Consett were up 5–0.
Only two minutes later, Will M burst through the defence for his first of the day, converted by Monty to extend the lead to 12–0. Will was on the scoresheet again soon after, crossing for his second to make it 19–0 after just 11 minutes.
Gateshead, however, hit back strongly. Taking advantage of a few loose defensive moments from Consett’s forwards, they scored three tries before the break — one converted — narrowing the gap to just 19–17 at half-time.
Second Half
With the wind now at their backs, Consett regrouped and tightened up defensively. The forwards — led by Seth and Louis, who shared hooker duties — impressed with accurate lineout throwing and solid scrummaging. Their control up front gave the backs a perfect platform to unleash their pace and precision.
Max F powered over early in the half, with Monty converting to make it 26–17. From there, Consett were dominant. Will Mc then stole the show, running in two well-taken tries, showing strength, speed, and excellent support play. Max F intercepted a dropout with superglue hands and a lovely off load to Harry C on the wing with Harry crossing the white wash again for consecutive weekends. Monty adding the conversions, before rounding off a fine individual performance by scoring and converting the final try himself to secure a 45–17 victory.
Final Score: Consett U14s 45 – 17 Gateshead U14s
Try Scorers: Jacob, Max F, Will Mc (3), Harry C, Monty
Conversions: Monty (4 from 7)
Forwards of the Match: Seth & Louis – excellent lineout throwing, strong in the scrum, and key in the second-half turnaround
