Hat Trick Heroics and Youthful Promise in Spirited Bourton Display

An overcast and breezy afternoon at Highnam set the scene for a tough outing for Bourton Vale 3rd XI, but one that was full of learning, heart, and some real positives—especially from the club’s next generation.

Highnam Court batted first and posted an imposing total of 257 for 8. Their innings was anchored by opener Jason Moseley, who made a chanceless 124—well, almost chanceless. His knock was given a major lifeline when our skipper, Phil Colmer, prematurely celebrated what looked to be a simple catch behind the stumps when Moseley was on 80, only for the ball to tumble to the turf. It was a moment that drew knowing smiles all round—and reminded us not to celebrate too early!

Despite the heavy total, Bourton never dropped their intensity in the field. Arman Laiq led the bowling attack with real fire, finishing with figures of 4 for 54. His hat trick was the highlight of the innings, greeted with jubilant celebrations —proof that moments of magic can still shine in difficult games.

This fixture also marked the senior cricket debut for three promising 12/13 year-olds: Harry Rollinson, Hamish Haseler, and Barney Newhook. All three showed tremendous composure and talent well beyond their years. Harry was outstanding in the field, showing great energy throughout, while his leg spin was beautifully flighted and showed real promise. Hamish bowled with pace and control, swinging the ball naturally and causing real problems for some well-set batsmen. He deserved more for his efforts.

Barney had a particularly memorable day—after bowling four steady overs, he went on to top-score in our reply with 10 not out, carrying his bat and showing real grit in the face of a strong Highnam attack.

Bourton’s chase never quite got going, and the team were dismissed for 62. But numbers don’t tell the whole story. There was a tremendous team spirit in the field, with encouragement and support echoing throughout the innings. While the scoreboard didn’t reflect our efforts, the attitude, energy, and commitment—especially from our debutants—made this a day to be proud of.

Plenty to build on as we move forward. Onwards and upwards.
